Mystery Lake

Mystery Lake is one of the primary regions in The Long Dark and the first available for play in the Sandbox. The region is named after Mystery Lake, a lake that feeds into Carter Hydro Dam. A railway crosses the region and is mainly used in the summers supporting the local timber operation and lakeside recreation.

Ideal for new players. A balance between wilderness and man-made shelters, resources, and wildlife.

Key Locations

Camp Office

Camp Office is a two-storey cabin located on the western side of Mystery Lake.

The Camp Office is a good source of materials and other resources for the player to collect.

The Camp Office has two entrances (front and back) and two floors. The first floor features a work bench and a potbelly stove. The second floor features a wood burning stove, bunk beds, dresser, cupboard and a table.

Due to a wolf spawn located between the railroad tracks and the Camp Office, be wary of using this location as a safe house as it may cause a drain on your ammunition and/or items used to distract a wolf. On the other hand, this is a good location to farm a wolf as the office provides both quick shelter and a work bench. A wolf should spawn every 2-3 in-game days.

Carter Hydro Dam

Carter Hydro Dam is a small hydroelectric dam containing two generation turbines.

It exists as two separately loading levels each of which has an exit to the outside and serves as a transition zone between Mystery Lake and Pleasant Valley.

The dam is a vast multi-level complex with many lockers, boxes, drawers and other containers to search. It also contains work bench, a fire barrel, and often has excellent loot.

The dam is inhabited by a wolf, named by The Long Dark community 'Fluffy'. Once killed, she will not be replaced for the remainder of that game.

Clear Cut

Clear Cut is a location in the north-western corner of Mystery Lake.

Caution is advised when approaching Clearcut as wolves frequently roam the area. A measly amount of loot can be scavenged from several frozen corpses scattered around the area.

A narrow, winding road to the Forestry Lookout is accessed from this area.

Dave's Quiet Clearing

A cave near the Lake Trail in Mystery Lake.

Dave's Quiet Clearing is a cave-like formation with a mostly open roof. A frozen corpse or a backpack can be found inside and searched for what little loot it may contain.

Deadfall Area

Deadfall Area is a mostly unremarkable area in Mystery Lake.

Deadfall Area lies between the camp office, tunnel collapse, Trapper's Homestead and unnamed pond. Deadfall Area's sole interest is a ruined building which may contain some loot and a still usable stove.

Derailment

Derailment is a small train wreck in Mystery Lake.

Derailment consists of a small train wreck near the center of the Mystery Lake region. Up to two wolves may be encountered around the train wreck. Inside of the train car, there is: a corpse, a metal container, a back pack, and on rare instances a .303 hunting rifle.

Forestry Outlook

Forestry Lookout is a tall, wooden structure found in Mystery Lake.

The forestry lookout sits on a small hill to the north-east of the Unnamed Pond and south of clear cut.

It is difficult to access. It contains bunk beds, wood stove, a radio, food, and a hunting rifle spawn. There is a frozen corpse outside.

The interior is warm enough to keep you from freezing even during a blizzard. The lookout is reached from clear cut by following the sign up the mountain trail.

The forestry lookout does not make an ideal base, it is especially cold when exiting due to the high altitude. This means by the time you reach the bottom of the path you may be cold already. There is a wood stove inside to warm you and cook food The long trek down the mountain and back up again means any trip is time consuming. There are only 5 or so nearby buildings to be searched, so if you have searched these a very long trek must be made to gain additional supplies. Wolves patrol the clear cut area, this can be a drain on flares or ammunition as you can't simply turn around and hide in the house if the wolf is in aggression range. Both the Camp Office and the Trapper's Homestead make more adequate bases.

Frozen Creek

Frozen Creek is a location upstream of Unnamed Pond in Mystery Lake.

Frozen Creek is located east upstream from Unnamed Pond, south-east of Forestry Lookout, and west of Derailment.

Some Reishi mushrooms and Rose hips can be found on the southern side of the creek.

Ice Fishing Huts

Small structures on the ice good for fishing.

Fishing huts have an ice fishing hole, which you can use after breaking the ice cover of it. Other interior include Pot Belly Stove, cupboard, drawer and two shelves. There is enough space to place a bedroll.

Most fishing huts lack doors, but wolves will not enter regardless. It is unknown if bears will enter fishing huts without doors. Fishing huts with doors will keep out bears and wolves when closed.

Lake Cabins

The lake cabins are two collections of three cabins in Mystery Lake.

The lake cabins are located along the southern shore of Mystery Lake. Valuable supplies can be found inside the cabins which also provide good protection from the elements.

Logging Camp

Logging Camp is a collection of several small trailers - presumably to shelter the loggers of the nearby Clearcut in Mystery Lake.

The logging camp consist of three small, temporary structures and a ruined building.

Valuable supplies can be scavenged from inside the camp but beware of wolves lurking nearby.

Lone Lake Cabin

The lone lake cabin is a single cabin in Mystery Lake.

The lone lake cabin is located along the eastern shore of Mystery Lake. Some supplies can be found inside the cabin which also provides good protection from the elements. Occasionally, a hunting rifle and a Frozen Corpse can be found behind it. A possible bear spawn is near here and a bear cave.

Lookout

Lookout - high in elevation - offers a wide view of Mystery Lake that is partially obscured by trees.

A lonely maple sapling can be harvested here.

Max's Last Stand

Max's Last Stand is a location which is at the south-western corner of Mystery Lake and south of Trapper's Homestead.

Max's Last Stand is directly south of Trapper's Homestead. Max is found laying face down, dead, and frozen in the snow. His proximity to Trapper's Homestead hints that he was the previous owner.

Trapper's Homestead

Trapper's Homestead is a location in the south-western corner of Mystery Lake.

Trapper's Homestead is accessible from a path to the east and a difficult path to the north-east. Valuable supplies may be scavenged from the Trapper' Homestead, including a hunting rifle along with ammunition.

An open patch of ice and snow surrounds Trapper's Homestead, sometimes abundant with deer and rabbits. Adjacent to the Trapper's Homestead is a small abandoned barn and due further south is Max's Last Stand.

The interior of Trapper's Homestead is filled with valuable supplies. It contains a bed, a wood stove, a workbench, and many containers.

Outside the Homestead lies an abandoned barn and some birch saplings.

The Trapper's Homestead can serve as a good safehouse due to the many storage containers, stove and working bench. The Homestead is a very warm building, a fire will not always be required to warm you up. Unfortunately it lies far away from many of the other buildings in Mystery Lake. The raised path to the door can give you some time to either shoot an approaching wolf or return indoors.

Train Bridge

Train Bridge is a bridge near Carter Hydro Dam in Mystery Lake.

Train Bridge is between Carter Hydro Dam and Train Loading Area.

A frozen corpse, maple sapling, cat tail plants and reishi mushrooms can be found by the shore below the bridge.

Train Loading Area

Train Loading Area is a location to the north in Mystery Lake.

The Train Loading Area is where lumber was once loaded onto trains to be transported elsewhere. It is located just west of Train Bridge and north-east of Derailment.

No loot can be found here and the area serves little more than as a landmark.

Tunnel Collapse

Tunnel Collapse is a location to the south in Mystery Lake.

Several rear carriages of a train and a blocked entrance to a tunnel are all that can be found at the Tunnel Collapse. There may be some loot nearby to scavenge inside of containers scattered around the carriages.

Inside of the tunnel provides some shelter from the wind.

Unnamed Pond

The Unnamed Pond is a location on the western side of Mystery Lake.

The Unnamed Pond is located south-south-west of the Forestry Lookout and far north-north-east of Trapper's Homestead.

A single hunting stand resides on the side of the pond. Usually a round of rifle ammo is found inside.
